Fun Affordable Things to Do in the UK

Although you may be on a limited student’s budget, the UK is brimming with affordable activities and events that cater to everyone’s interests. Below is a guide to just a few things you may be interested in exploring:

1. Explore a Museum

As one of the most culturally diverse places in the world, the UK has museums in almost every city, with the vast majority being free of charge! Some museums focus on a particular period or style of art, but many display a large range of art pieces that can take several visits to explore. The Tate and Tate Modern have various branches located in various cities around the UK, with each carrying pieces that best fit the vibe of the city. The National Portrait Gallery, in London, amongst many others, has rotating pieces that ‘visit’ various museums around the UK and many have free or heavily discounted exhibitions, so it’s always worth doing a little research, or signing up to their newsletters, so you don’t miss out.

2. Explore a Palace or a Castle

Home to world’s most recognizable royal family, and a rich history of monarchs and noble families, almost every city has a palace or castle you can visit. Historic Royal Palaces and Royal Collection Trust house (pun not intended) a large collection of places to visit, both of which offer student discounts as well as group booking discounts. The UK is also home to a variety of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such as the city of Bath, which houses the beautiful of Roman Baths and can be accessed via train from most cities in the UK. Universities such as Cambridge and Oxford also offer free access to their legendary campuses, as well as incredibly cheap punting trips.

3. Explore the UK’s Culinary Scene

Want to try a fancy meal but can’t afford it? Many restaurants offer discounted lunch menus – albeit with smaller portions – that you can take advantage of. Some places also have discounts on certain days, and many offer student discounts. Apps such as Deliveroo and Uber Eats also offer discounts and deals on a variety of restaurants and grocery shops on certain days or during certain time periods.

4. Enjoy the Parks

One of the main advantages of living in the UK is that there’s no shortage of beautiful parks at your disposal. And the great thing is, almost all of them are free! The options are endless: you can study, read a book, exercise, meet friends, have a picnic, meditate or even binge your show, while enjoying the fresh air and beautiful nature.

5. Do a Walking Tour

The UK has an endless supply of walking tours, and as one of the most pedestrian friendly countries in the world, they can be incredibly enjoyable. Many enthusiasts offer free walking tours, such as the infamous Harry Potter Walking Tour in Edinburgh, while others have early bird and group offers. Some universities also offer walking guides so don’t forget to check!
